From pipes and joints to blunts and bongs, smoking is the primary way people consume cannabis. Although it is an enjoyable and therapeutic activity, it’s important to understand that, just like cigarettes, cannabis smoke contains irritating substances and tar linked to respiratory issues. If you’re new to the cannabis world you may be finding yourself overwhelmed by options and curious about the pros and cons of each method. Here are some things you need to be aware of.
1. Joints
They’re made from the packing of cannabis into a roll or rolled paper “typically made of hemp, rice, or paper,” states Stacia Woodcock PharmD Clinical Cannabis Pharmacist as well as Dispensary Manager at Curaleaf. You may also include a filter in order to avoid burning your fingers while smoking.
Smoke and roll the joint:
- Then, break it down using an herb grinder or your fingers. Take out any stems or seeds.
- If you want to use the filter, you can cut an incredibly thin piece of cardboard (you have to make sure it fits into the paper once it’s been rolled) then fold it “accordion-style” into a tip.
- As you roll the paper lengthwise “hot dog style,” add the crushed weed, placing your filter at the other end.
- Place the paper in between your fingertips, then roll it into a shape like a tube or a cone.
- Then, light the other end of the joint, then inhale through the filter.
Remember that many readily available commercially-available rolling paper — particularly those labeled as fast-burning, bleached, or flavored harmful chemicals, and pollutants that can harm your lungs. Therefore, opting for a paper that is unbleached or unflavored and refined will reduce the chance of exposure. If you’re worried about exposure to chemicals, think about using a non-paper smoking method that includes a bong, or pipe.

2. Blunts
Blunts are usually larger and last longer than joints, but they’re made similarly. The main difference is that blunts are made of a cigar wrap or blunt instead of rolling paper.
Blunt wraps are made of tobacco leaves, meaning they contain nicotine. According to research from 2010 and the study, the nicotine content in blunts resulted in higher levels of carbon monoxide, a harmful chemical, in the study subjects’ bloodstream, which led to the occurrence of side effects like nausea headaches, dizziness, and nausea.
3. Pipe
Pipes, also known as spoons or bowls, are among the easiest methods of smoking.
Pipes are comprised of a hollow bowl with a “stem,” and a mouthpiece that you breathe through to inhale. Some pipes have a carb hole, a small hole next to the bowl which you cover and then open with your fingers while inhaling in order to clear the pipe of smoke.
4. Bong
Bongs also referred to as water pipes are smoke devices that make use of water to cool and remove smoke. Because the smoke is cooled in this way, smokers tend to have larger hits and release more smoke than they do with blunts, joints, or bowls.
Most bongs consist of two parts: a bowl and a cylinder of glass called a “downstem.” When you hit a bong, smoke travels through the downstem, and it is removed through the water before going into the bong’s neck until the mouthpiece.
While some users believe bongs are the most healthful use of cannabis, “they may not be all that effective at reducing toxins,” says Nicolas Schlienz, Ph.D. Research Director at Cannabis Education Organization Realm of Caring.
